Networking Is Useless
Unless you know how to ask for help...
Hey Owners,
Does it ever dawn on you that networking is useless….
If you never use your network.
Duh, if you don’t use it,
How could it be useful?
Having thousands of contacts does not mean that equates to dollars in your bank account.
Today im going to briefly show you how I ask people in my network for favors,
Even if they are multi-millionaires (Especially if they are)
“I really need your help with something”
It was a Wednesday morning.
7:08am
He was late.
Again.
We never cared though, because he’s Ed.
Ed is one of my mentors back in Sacramento California and he is someone that I have grown very close with over the last year.
He is the first real millionaire mentor that I have ever had the pleasure of being mentored by in person on a regular basis.
Ed is the kind of guy to have all the coolest stuff in the world going on.
Much cooler than what your doing,
But he will sit there and ask questions and listen to you like your the most interesting person in the world.
He is an expert at making people feel special and worthy of success and love.
Anyways, on this particular Wednesday, Ed, myself, and 2 other friends of mine were having breakfast together.
When we meet with Ed I dont talk that much.
I am asking question after question.
Literally taking notes on every gold nugget that falls out of his mouth.
That day I asked him this:
“Ed, your one of the most well connected people I know. Your friends with Tony Robbins, every mayor of every surrounding city, the bankers you bank with.
How do you do it?
How do you get high level people warm up to you so easy and get them to want to talk more?”
What he said changed the way I network forever.
“When your talking to people, Leave the business talk out of it until the last minute.
When you meet someone, you should want to talk about anything but their business.
You need to talk to them like your interested in who they are as a person and find out what makes them who they are so you can become friends with the real version of them, not the business version.
The Golden Ratio is:
85% asking personal questions (building rapport)
15% Talking about the biz or opportunity (closing the deal)”
ONLY TALK ABOUT BUSINESS NEAR THE END OF THE CONVO.
Then I asked:
“Ok well its great to get tons of contacts of high level people in your phone but how do you ask for favors from those kinds of people without seeming needy or desperate.”
“Simple” he says, “All you have to say is that you need help”
“What?” I questioned with a confused look on my face.
Theres no way it could be that easy.
“Yeah, just say this; ‘Hey you know, there’s something that I really need help with and I dont know if its you or if its someone that you know that could give me some pointers on this but here is what Im going through”
Wow, that is easy.
Its easy and I have used it many times now.
Here is the way I have found it to be successful and flowy.
Say the first line:
“Hey you know, there’s something that I really need help with and I dont know if it’s you or if its someone that you know that could give me some pointers on this but here is what Im going through”
Then tell them the story of what’s going on.
Only share the most relevant details.
You want to keep them engaged and curious about what your about to ask them for.
Then as you wrap up your story, You say something like:
“So really what I am asking right now is if you are able to X”
You should get creative with how you word things.
Don’t do things the way I do them unless it works really well for you.
Use your own voice.
Using this tactic has allowed me to get favors and get into rooms that I never thought possible.
Its so simple and low pressure to ask for help this way that soon,
If your like me, you will find yourself using it almost every time you ask for help.
Who isn’t down to give you “Some Pointers” on something they know about?
Theres a few epic stories I have from using this and I will share them on a future edition.
For now tho, this is just one thing to add to the foundation for your networking skills.
Use it wisely.
Go live a fun life, Bandrew.
